How to Screen Record in Windows 10 or Higher

Windows 10 and 11 both come with a built-in feature called the Xbox Game Bar that lets you take screenshots and record gameplay. The methods below explain how to record a screen using the Xbox Game Bar.

  • Open the software or app you want to record using.
  • To access the Xbox Game Bar, press the Windows key and G on your keyboard.
  • In the Game Bar menu, select the “Capture” button (the one that resembles a camera).
  • You can decide whether to capture the entire screen or only a section of it.
  • To begin recording, click the “Record” button (which resembles a circle).
  • Click the “Stop” button (which resembles a square) in the Game Bar menu to halt recording.

Your screen recording will be saved in the “Captures” folder under your Videos folder once you’ve completed filming. The Xbox app may be opened, then you can access your films by selecting the “Captures” option.

Method 2

Another built-in tool that lets you record gameplay or any other screen activity is Windows Game Recorder. The methods below explain how to record a screen using the Windows Game Recorder:

  • Open the software or app you want to record using.
  • To access the Game Bar, press the Windows key and G on your keyboard.
  • From the Game Bar menu, select “Settings” by clicking the button that resembles a gear.
  • Place a check in the box next to “Record game clips, screenshots, and broadcast using Game bar.”
  • To begin recording, close the Game Bar menu and hit Windows + Alt + R.
  • Press Windows key + Alt + R again to halt recording.

Your screen recording folder will have a “Captures” folder where your recording will be saved.

OBS Studio

How to use OBS Studio to record screen

  • From the official website, download and install OBS Studio.
  • Select “Create New” in the “Scenes” box after opening OBS Studio. Click “OK” after naming it.
  • Click the plus sign (+) and choose “Display Capture” or “Window Capture” in the “Sources” box to take a screenshot of your full screen or a particular window or application, respectively.
  • The dropdown menu will allow you to select the display or window you want to capture.
  • Drag the capture box’s corners and borders to change its size and location.
  • At the bottom right of the OBS Studio window, click the “Settings” button.
  • The video resolution, frame rate, and bitrate options for your recording can be found under the “Output” tab.
  • Choose your preferred video format, storage location, and file name under the “Recording” option.
  • To save your changes and return to the main OBS Studio window, click “OK“.
  • To start recording, click the “Start Recording” button (the red circle).
  • To stop recording after you are done, click the “Stop Recording” button (the square).
  • The location you designated for your recording in the “Recording” tab of the options menu will be where it is saved.
